Thoroughly rinse the fish. Remove gills and eyes from the fish head. Reach in and pull out the entrails. Rinse the cavity out with a good stream of water. Cut into pieces. Put fish into the cold water and bring to a boil. Remove the foam. Cook about 15-20 minutes.
Add chopped potatoes, grated carrot, tomato sauce, garlic and bay leaves. Season with salt and spices to taste.
Heat oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add finely chopped onion. Saute until onion is translucent about 5-8 minutes and then add to the saucepan. Cook the soup until soft potatoes about 15-20 minutes. Serve hot. Optionally sprinkle with chopped leeks, parsley or dill. Enjoy your meal!!!
