Sour Cherry Dumplings or Vareniki

The cherry dumplings are a famous dish in Slavic cuisine. They are known as cherry dumplings, vareniki or cherry pierogies. This dish popular in several Eastern European cuisines, including Ukrainian, Russian, Polish, Belarusian, Lithuanian cuisines. Use fresh or frozen cherries or sour cherries.


  • all-purpose flour (for dough) 3 cups
  • water 1 cup
  • salt 12 tsp.
  • vegetable oil 2 tbsp.
  • sour cherry, pitted and halved (450 gram) 1 lb.
  • sugar 1 cup
  • all-purpose flour (for cherry) 2 tbsp.


  1. Mix all-purpose flour with warm water, salt and vegetable oil. Knead the dough for the dumplings.
  2. Thoroughly rinse the cherries. Remove the cherry pits!!! Combine cherry with sugar and all-purpose flour. ***Use fresh or frozen cherry or sour cherries.
  3. Thinly roll the dough and cut into small squares or circles. Put a cherry in the middle. Use your fingers to pinch the pleats around the edges.
  4. Bring the water to a boil, add a little salt, and then vareniki. Cook for about 3-5 minutes until they float to the top. Then remove them with a slotted spoon to a bowl. Serve hot with sour cream or cherry juice. Enjoy your meal!!!
